«Community Strategic Planning Documents and Nature Conservation» – Workshop

  • 🗓 September -10
  • 🕙 Time: 10:00 AM–2:30 PM
  • 📍 Location: Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy + Online

On September 10, in a mixed format at the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National University of Cherkasy, together with the NGO “UNCG” and the NGO “Ecosocium”, we are holding a seminar on the topics of landscape planning, taking into account environmental needs, and preserving biodiversity in strategic community planning documents.

Currently, as part of decentralization, communities are developing a large number of strategic documents—such as community development strategies, comprehensive recovery programs, and comprehensive spatial development plans.

These documents do not always adequately address biodiversity conservation and nature restoration, even though this is a requirement not only of Ukrainian national legislation but also of Ukraine’s European integration commitments.

Consequently, not only does wildlife suffer and the ecological condition of areas deteriorate, but the investment appeal of communities also declines due to investigations, lawsuits, and conflicts related to the illegal or unsustainable use of natural resources.

However, with the help of GIS technologies and landscape planning, it is possible to prepare high-quality, balanced documents that will become a solid foundation for the sustainable and stable development of a community.

Based on their own experience from various regions of Ukraine, the speakers will cover topics including:

  • The types and interconnections of community strategic documents;
  • Positive and negative examples of their development;
  • How to integrate nature conservation goals into development documents;
  • Practical applications of GIS in spatial planning.

At the end of the event, recommendations for ensuring the proper consideration of the nature conservation component in community-level planning will be proposed for discussion.
